But both should be practised at different times to teach the kid the importance of maintaining discipline. The bottom line Both punishment and reinforcement have their pros and cons. For example, if your kid fights with his/her sibling then they should not be allowed to play outdoors. Negative Punishment: Negative punishment involves taking away a desirable stimulus, on the recurrence of behaviour. For example, when kids play at study time parents can scold them for their mistake. Positive Punishment: Positive punishment involves imposing an aversive stimulus after certain behaviour has happened. Even punishments are of two types: Positive and negative. It should not instil fear in them, else it would backfire. The punishment you impose on your kid should be logical and easy. However, at times you need to punish your kid to make them understand that bad actions have consequences. Many might believe that punishment can harm a kid's mental health and reinforcement is a better way to discipline them. This reduces the likelihood that a behaviour will occur again. This simply means to impose a penalty as a result of undesirable behaviour. What is punishment? Punishment is an action taken to discourage undesired actions. Kids will always rely on external rewards which might not be beneficial for them in the long term. When parents lean too much on reinforcement technique, kids always look for some kind of reward or benefit for acting in a certain way, which in reality should be self-regulatory. The downside of the reinforcement technique At times even reinforcement technique can backfire if done incorrectly. For example, if your kid wants you to stop nagging, ask them to complete their homework on time or they want something from you, tell them to help you to finish household chores. Negative Reinforcement: In case of negative reinforcement, you need to remove an aversive stimulus or object to enhance certain behaviour.
